Jump by Ye Gam Theatre at Peacock Theatre 2009

GO! If you hear about it just go, don’t think. Till now I used to tell everyone Lion King was the best musical/play ever… now it’s Jump and they’ve set the bar very very high now. You know when you love something so much you wanna tell your peeps about it in detail… I wanna tell you every joke, sequence and sound effect… don’t worry I wont spoil too much.

Started of with this old man struggling to walk around in the audience. He gets crowd participation as he gets a girl to help him up the stairs so the jokes and laughs had already started. The stage and back drop was the same throughout, like a veranda and facade of a building… well Chinese tracing paper material stuff you know. The family is introduced with pimping Grand dad, Dad, crazy Mom, very Flexible daughter, geek boyfriend that turns into gangsta hunk when his glasses are taken off and party boy son. Mix Kung Fu Hustle with Matrix and as Viv said… cartoons… only their martial art is Tae-Kwon-Do. We laughed so much, hell it was so funny we were laughing like black folks jerking in their seats and all. I wanna go again and again man… like these guys had fighting skills, acrobatics, coordination and to go with it all they had the perfect sound fx. Sometimes there was no joke just sound fx and the crowd went in a fit. What else did they do…. oh yeah rewinding and replaying slow motion movie style. Got more crowd participation as they get this guy in a suit to fight and then a hottie. The son did some Jacky Chan drunken martial arts. And to end the first part the young couple get into a dance/acrobatic sequence and then the mom and dad get into a sequence too only the mom wants some, dad doesn’t so they end up doing their own version of the tango.

Also the story was very much like a situational comedy where there is a main dilemma/story, in this case trying to get girl and geek boy together. And then sub dilemmas like for the first part it was getting the place clean? And introducing the main dilemma. The second part was them getting robbed and of course getting the young lovers together. The thieves were so funny, especially the bigger guy with the afro. All of them worked the props just like Jacky Chan would. The music was interesting from hero like guitar that reminded me of Saber Rider, to songs with that twang you hear in Shafts music. Some excellent Matrix effects especially the wind one where one of them runs so fast all the rest actually follow. I was very impressed with the continuity especially when the old man was knocked out behind the couch but you gotta see it to know. They were pretty long with the outro through but it was still great, some swords and glowing fighting stick performance, then individual acrobatics where that big afro guy was too funny coz you think he’d do the same thing like the rest and use the walls to do a flip or something but … he’d surprise you ;o)

Notes: 1- One thing I loved about their jokes was they milked it just right. They’d do it once for the shock value, then again for familiarity value and finally a third one to milk out any laughs left in our funny bones or funny teats. 2 – During the break I went to the sound booth to ask what software they use for their sound fx. They were being evasive so I’m like you have a sound machine? Yes thats it, whatever you say. Lol forgot Indians and Chinese like stealing ideas to make money so don’t ask trade secrets lol.

Mega big up Viv for this one man, fo sho!

Marcus the Sadist – A Rap Opera 09

Marcus the Sadist – A Rap Opera
From the program: Markus Wright, a talented young emcee, plucked from the local battle scene by a slick A&R with promise of money, fame and A-list celebrity status. He must accept the corny conditions of the recording contract, then sign his music and himself over to “The Company”. The story takes an unexpected turn when at the height of his popularity Markus decided to completely switch his style.

Impressive stuff man. 8 primary cast, 7 of whom would switch roles according to the scene. Most of the script was in rhyme. Most of the rhymes were great. They had some kinda genuine rap flavor from metaphors, jokes, stories, etc. Now I don’t know if it was the microphones or the cast themselves but I had to strain to follow some of their raps. Plus the noisy group in front didn’t help but they weren’t that noisy anyway. Markus played a great role… all shy and stuff but then the game changed him. For once I actually felt compassion for the ‘sellout rappers’ coz they just get sucked in thinking it’s just entertainment and of course the money makes you do some crazy things. I would like to give special props to Irish stand-up comedian and rapper Rob Broderick. He had to play like 4-5 different roles with different accents and at one point he was play 3 roles… a French man, an American Sergeant type dude and an English Toff. Arguing with himself in 3 accents and that speed? Kudos for sure.

The story was very typical. Underground rappers hating on sellouts, companies and marketing. publicity stunts and consequences. The cast made it captivating taking us on highs and lows. Remember the noisy group? They even started awwwing and pleading. As for the stage… stage, 2 movable translucent screens… then there’s projectors and folks with video camera’s. So the screens would be used for either what the video cameras were capturing real time or for recorded material like news flashes or just as a screen say like prison windows or walls… orrrr the most impressive bit was when they used it for like a 3D computer console thing like in Minority Report and stuff. That definitely gets props… wonder what they used to render all that. Anyway… big up Viv, this was a good find.

Afro-Pop Art: Politics, Life and Lyrics by Ghariokwu Lemi

Afro-Pop Art: Politics, Life and Lyrics by Ghariokwu Lemi
As the title says… it is a visual commentary or issues ranging between politics, life and lyircs in a pop-art style… all by a legendary Nigerian artist by the name of Ghariokwu Lemi.

When it came to first impressions I was confused. The exhibition was set in a couple of barges. One for the art, the other one was for food, drink, music and had a screen with Lemi’s old and new work being projected. As Shanell caught up with Lemi all I could see was photoshopped print outs that that did have a great message but they were still photoshopped prints cut out and pasted. In fact one was a colorized email forward! As I was introduced to Lemi he explained taking a new direction so that was good to hear and what an amazing person himself… always lively and happy… and he’s like that sober. I warm up to his work as Shanell tells me about his past work and how she was his personal photographer touring in the USA. Even she was surprised by this new direction because his previous work was more detailed and more hands on instead of digital. There’s images of Michael Jackson and also one of Barak Obama in the campaign style posterization called Red, Blue and Black. Another one with someone getting stoned and I forgot to ask Lemi what NNG means coz the person smokes those letters out. The one I was really impressed with was one of Fela Kuti where it’s mostly colorized clips from papers about the star and Lemi but it took me a while to make out the face of Fela Kuti on it. And then there were the series of solidarity in 3 square images called Union, Unity and Unite… at first I thought it was saying something about the UN in Africa but after reading their names it all fell in place lol.

Anyway so head for some drink, snacks and chit chat. Note: There were normal snacks and also cherry tomatoes and Fox mints? I must admit I scoffed on the tomatoes. I come across a dude called Aj and he gives me his card… I see what he does… and it’s like his card itself had all the magic words… “music + art + creativity”… I’ll definitely be in touch dude. He was also the DJ and I noticed the deck had a telephone handset… nice touch! As I look at the screen I see Lemi’s old work and now I’m hooked… this guy has done a number of Fela Kuti’s album covers. Shanell mentions him working for Puma. And then I get a hold of his program and read through his biography… major props man! Cartoonist for the papers, 26 iconic covers for Fela Kuti, more covers for another record label. By 2000 he’d created 2000 album covers! Political cartoons, commissioned by MTV to paint a mural in New York, Stussy releases 4 of his designs for limited edition T-shirts, lots of exhibitions, awards… wow… this guy left me inspired. All that work, especially on such serious subjects, and he’s still so happy-go-lucky? Then again art does that and more. Big up Shanell and big up Lemi.

Gay Icons and BP Portrait Award 2009

Gay Icons and BP Portrait Award 2009
Joanne, my lovely new friend I met on gumtree, treated me to the National Portrait Gallery and I’m so glad she did.

Gay Icons
========
From the brochure: This exhibition brings together ten selectors, chaired by Sandi Toksvig, each of whom is a prominent gay figure in contemporary culture and society. Each selector was asked to name six people, who may or may not be gay, whom they personally regard as inspirational, or an icon for them. These people provide a fascinating range of figures – some heroic, some very famous, others less well known.

So yeah it was pretty cool to read about these folks and their stories and why they were chosen etc. Couple of things that stood out to me… 1 – Nashville had more of an issue with k. d. lang being a vegetarian than being homosexual! 2 – There was a picture of another figure taken when arrested and the mugshot said he was accused of being a gay terrorist?!?!?

The selectors were – Waheed Alli, Alan Hollinghurst, Elton John, Jackie Kay, Billie Jean King, Ian McKellen, Chris Smith, Ben Summerskill, Sandi Toksvig and Sarah Waters.

BP Portrait Award 2009
=================
All I can say is… flabbergasting. Jo and I were walking around like jaw dropped zombies amazed ad most of the paintings look like the real thing/photograph (or it could be we just needed sleep :oP). Even with the different lighting the artists used they still managed to make it look totally real, the details were crazy. Oh and folks would gather at this one painting and upon closer inspection you could see it was the detail in the colorful sweater. In fact check it out at http://www.npg.org.uk/bp-portrait-award-20091/downloads.php
Mega big up to Jo for the treats.

Tim Richards Trio – JazzLive @ The Crypt 09

Tim Richards Trio – JazzLive @ The Crypt 09
Wow! I was wowed right from the start. This thing takes place in the crypt of a church! And the atmosphere was so so typical Jazz atmosphere it was amazing. Because we were late, at first we got a funny seating area and I mostly had to look at the mirror to see just the bassists hand and piano mans head. There are stools and foldable tables so you just pick what you need and set up shop where you can. Since it was hard to see the players I got to enjoy the many drawings and sketches on the walls from faces to hands playing pianos etc. The food is cheap, the crowd is cool and the players are smokin’. I do like Jazz but I’m not a connoisseur… yet, so Judit explained some bits. The trio had a new drummer that did some crazy solos. I personally love the bassist doing his thing. At one point the bassist was doing his solo and the drummer and piano/keyboard just add little fillers right… so Judit starts laughing and tell me to listen how the bassist sounds like it’s yapping away and the keyboard is agreeing at the end of sentences kinda thing. Pretty funny. Later we did get better seats but the stools were not all that comfy and I’m all about seating. But anyway seeing a live band is magic so yay! Note: Remembered Ria coz of the live band.

Body Worlds & The Mirror of Time at The O2 09

Body Worlds & The Mirror of Time at The O2 09
I don’t know whether to bow down or worry about Gunther von Hagens. This thing was crazy… it’s like dude spends most of his time skinning people and animals. Why don’t I walk you through it. As we walk in the maze first thing we come across are projections of people morphing from when they were young to old age. Good stuff. Then we come to the change in size of the embryo from 6 to 8 weeks. Man that thing grows from looking like a grain of rice to looking like a baby jellyfish. I wasn’t sickened by it but my gag reflex was kicking in. Keep in mind that between the main things I mention there were displays of bones, organs, slices of different parts of the body (breast totally looks like turkey ham), arterial configurations, nerves, neurons, blood vessels, aortas and such. There were lots of skinned people I’ll tell you that. Some in different situations of life like sports, gymnastics, one dude was standing there with his hand out where the rest of
his body skin rested!

Anyway back to the maze… Skinned pregnant woman with tummy sliced enough to see lil tyke in the praying position hehehe. Other skinned folks showing ligaments so the muscles were stripped… basically skinned folks in different stages. Observation… Skin Man (dude holding his body skin) was the first time I realized the testicles without the bag makes it look like man has 3 penises. And most of the skinned men were packing if you know what I mean. Between all of this were posters full of info e.g. how aging takes it’s toll on the eyes. And examples of how artist saw one thing and painted another. Lots of tips from the health folks… usual first aid stuff and myth busters. Then they had a rabbit and chicken’s nerves… all in red so it more or less looked like red candy floss in the animals shape. Skinned old person.

There was a separate room for adults only where skinned folks were in the ‘riding’ position. The info poster says the penis can bend like a boomerang when inside the partner. Like it’s not already a fun toy ;o) But yeah, after a while it’s like yeah seen seems like the same stuff now. It finishes off with a giraffe. That was awefull I would have said awesome but I was full of awe not just some. On leaving there was some life calculator thing… was gonna try it but looked complicated so check out the merchandise instead. Funny how they got Body World merch and then it turns to Michael Jackson T-shirts. Note: Someone mentioned a cow split in half and you can walk between it to see inside stuff… no signs of a cow. Note again: Seeing all that definitely reminded Viv and I of steaks, bacon, hams, etc… so we were getting hungry in there. It’s called a traveling exhibition? Folks were talking rooms and rooms of skinned people… a huge horse and giraffe!!! Through out I was wondering how they keep them in the same position and move them in and out of places.
It’s nuts!
