IN ADORATION OF TIME by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
When there is problem in life, what helps us to carry us through the problem?
First is knowing everything is going to change. Our body is changing, this is temporary. Mind changes, emotion changes, thought changes. Everything in the world is changing. People change, their emotions change, your feeling good or bad changes. So everything is changing. Knowing this what happens? You gain the strength to move through. You don’t worry, you just walk ahead. Hmmm? You kick the problem by your left food. (laughs) And keep your smile you know. Nothing! Its going to change, ok move on. Correct? Everything is changing. If there’s a problem we’re not going to be stuck with the problem for all our life.

You know some people they come to your with a problem, you council them, council them. Till they’re not convinced, they go with the same thing right? You might have had this experience in your home, or with your friends. You tell them, give them sense, but they’re not really listening. They go wah wah wah wah. Same thing, what? They’re not living the knowledge, they’re not in the knowledge. Correct? So make them aware. See everything changes. Ya?

Then next. If they are not listening. They’re not… you need certain intelligence to see. No one else can make you see that you have see it yourself. Everything is changing. So many people shouting at the air, their voice telling everything is changing cannot make you feel that but if you’re intellect is sharp, it will understand ‘oh everything is changing’. So everything is changing has to come from within you. Your and own understanding. Are you getting what I’m saying?

Suppose you don’t get it, the second option is saying ‘nothing is going to change’. This somebody else can tell you. (laughs) When someone tells you its not going to change, its going to be that way. A husband complains to wife that you are very slow, you are not doing what I want you to do (and/or vice versa). And if the wife says its not going to change I’m going to be like this for all the time. (Guruji laughs) Husband has no chance but to accept. See if you say your mother-in-law is all the time nagging, she’s already old she’s not going to change! (laughs) You better accept her. Rather than complain all your life about your mother-in-law. Or your mother, if your mother is all the time complaining to you. Don’t expect a miracle to happen. (laughter) She’s already 65 or 85 and you go home one day, you expect her to change? If it changes well and good but ??? chances, you have to accept it the way? It is. If you see the way the children are crying and they are peeing all over the place and doing all that thing. (laughter) Children are not going to… that’s all they will be. Any kid in the world, they will pee on you. (Guruji laughs, mad laughter) Its not going to change! That’s why they are babies. If you expect a baby to behave like an adult, its not going to happen, mind you. Its not going to change.

So when someone else tells you its not going to change. That’s how its going to be. Then your mind going wah wah wah wah will shut up! (crazy laughter) Will say well, that’s how it is. You know when people have nothing to complain they start complaining about the weather. (laughter) Oh its so cold, oh its so hot, its so this much, oh so much snow. Its not going to change. Its going to snow, its going to snow here in the winter. That’s it, period. Why you are complaining? Its useless to complain. It so hot in Spain in the summer. Its going to be that way. For millenniums to come. Its going to be hot. Its going to be cold here, that’s it, period. So nothing is going to change. Either see everything is changing and accept and some other things see its not going to change and accept.

If neither of this works, the third is… come on! Roar like a lion! Wake up and say ‘HHHMMMMMMRRRRR’. I’m today, come what may I’m going to roar like a lion. So the third option you roar like a lion, that’s finished. This we did… and still if anything is left. That comes with prayer. My divine, my dear, you take this. This is my problem, I cant solve it, you solve, you better do it for me. Give it to anybody whom you love or anyone whom you trust or anything. Weather God or whatever Buddha, Allah, Jesus. You give it away. Then also you become relaxed.

So the ancient rishis said the four ways. Viveka – by discrimination by knowledge. Smriti – by remembering, knowing everything is changing. Shradha – by faith. Hmmm? Veerya – Valour or invoking the valour in you. Or through Samadhi, through meditation. Surrender, surrender and Samadhi. So these things, these options are open, 5 options. Including Samadhi… 5 options. Samadhi means meditation. And deep meditation. Where is the problem? (laughs)

When you just wake up and see what time is doing. Time is like the huge tidal wave and just coming and finishing off everything. Time does not leave anything untouched, anything left over. Time swallows everything. You went to school, you went to college, you did this, you did that, you fell in love, fell out of love, you broke somebody’s heart, you got your heart broken… everything happened. Then what happened? What happened with them all? The time came and just swept them all out. You don’t even find any trace, all the trace you find is only in your mind. Some memories, and its foolish to hang on to memories.

Memories of pleasant things create craving in you. When you have had some pleasure/enjoyment, those memories cling in your body and they create such a craving in you and that craving stops you from enjoying life, the moment. This is what is called sangadosha. The, how do you translate that into English, let me see. Its called sangadosha, means a dosha or a defect that has caught on you by your association. You are associating yourself with some thing for some time and after that, that sangadosha comes up on you and then that makes you miserable. And how to get over this, only way is becoming hollow and? Empty. And that’s what we will be doing tomorrow… hollow and empty (meditation). So realizing this, you see, the time sweeps under its, under it the whole/every event. Every event pleasant or unpleasant is swept away by the time. And you catch up with the time. Go with the time, that is joy. When you go against the time that is when you become miserable.

This is very simple, that’s why when you are happy you don’t feel the time you feel time pass away like that. When you are miserable you feel the time is endless, it is not passing at all. The mind/time are so interconnected. So it is in the time that the world dissolves, in the time new world appears. New world appears if you’re hanging on to the old, the past all the time, the new never comes up. You never see the new. Never enjoy the new. So that time you know, there is an old proverb, old couplet in Sanskrit says… I adore the time, kalay tasmai namah (spelling). Ancient people said, this time is incredible, I adore the time. Have you ever heard someone really praising the time? Worshipping the time? And say I adore the time, coz it just sweeps away all the past.

The pleasant memories make you miserable by creating craving in you. Unpleasant memories make you miserable by creating fear and paranoia in you. Your paranoia is because of the unpleasant memories. And the pleasant memories make you sad and miserable in the present moment. Unpleasant memories doesn’t make you sad. (Guruji laughs) It is the pleasant memories that make you sad. So you have to get out of the clutches of memory. Its good to have memory, memory is needed. But not get caught up in the memory. That is no a healthy sign of the mind. That’s not the sign of a healthy mind. And that is why the pranayama and the meditation makes such a difference. Pranayama, meditation brings so much energy in you, just pushes you up from the debris of the time, of the memory. Debris of the mind is buried in the debris of the memory. That’s the age, that’s when it starts aging, that’s when it become old. You look so old you know why? Coz you are loaded with memories. Your mind is buried under memories. When you resurrect from these debris with a smile, with a childlike innocence. That’s when life has spring back to action. Springing back into action. And that is what is enlightenment.

Enlightenment is where, the flame or fire of your life can never be put off or put down by anybody, any situation, anything outside. Move on with that and that’s the highest goal. If at all there is one goal in human life, that is this goal. To attain a state of consciousness wherein you resurrect from your debris. The debris of memories. Hmmm? Refuse to be buried under the memories or pleasant or unpleasant. Because that pinches your stomach, pinches your heart, pinches your head, and then you cry to the world oh I feel bad, I feel… Who cares? (laughter) The world does not care how you feel, the world only ask you, what have you done to me? The world is not bothered about your feeling at all. The world demands from you, what have you done? This earth says I feed you, I made you stay here, I give you shelter, I give. What have you done/given back to me? Garbage only? (Guruji laughs) Or something different. The earth, the air, the world in general ask from you, asks what you are doing not how you are feeling. So don’t be football of your own feelings. Ya? Bundle them up all and throw it in the Atlantic ocean (laughs). Bundle all your feelings, throw them.

People say follow your feelings, I would not recommend you… say don’t follow your feelings. Follow your wisdom. What is such a big deal about your feelings? One day you feel good, next day you feel bad about the same thing. You don’t need to different excuse to feel good and bad. With any one particular thing you’ll feel good and then next day you’ll feel bad about it. And next day you feel good again, then again bad. Never follow your feelings. Feelings are unstable. Hmmm? Feelings are like moving clouds, wisdom is a solid rock. That is staying for millennium. Stand on the rock not on the clouds. Got it? Enjoy the clouds when they come, but they pass away. When your foot is firm on wisdom. As humans you all have the feelings, they come and go. But not get really drowned in it. Don’t be drowned in these feelings. Wake up and move ahead in life, see what you want to do. Your commitment, you know when you are busy, when you have strong commitments in your life you don’t care about your feelings. When there is direction, you keep moving.

That is what is called the ‘seva warriors’. The team of warriors who do service in the society. They just don’t mind, keep working. See 80 thousand people died in the tsunami, today’s news in the television is 80 thousand people. More than 80 thousand people. If people are sitting and standing in front of everybody and crying oh my dear you left me you left me, they would never be able to do any work. So how people deal with them, those workers, social workers were doing there. They just go, what is needed they agree to do all that work. They gain that inner strength. Always remember, anyone who has any problem, along with the problem comes the strength to solve the problem. That’s why if the problem is a dog which comes behind you, the solution is its tail. The dog’s tail is its solution. So if you don’t see the solution you have to wait for a while the dog is going to wag its tail. (Guruji laughs, crowd laughs) A solution is going to appear for every problem. Wait till the dog wags its tail. So that courage, courage to move through the feelings, you know, courage to wake up and keep ones enthusiasm. Taking everything in life as a challenge not a problem, is what is wisdom. Hmmm? And when you are stable and strong, you will be great use to people and the society.

If you yourself is like a beaten up dog and always crying and wailing and veining and worrying about how you feel today, how you feel tomorrow… you’re not a strong pillar, you are not a strong source of strength and solace to people around you, isn’t it so? What d’you say? Huh? (Crowd goes YES). Don’t feel shy to raise your hand raise your hand. (laughter) Let me see. You be a source of strength, I want every one of you be a lighthouse in this world where there is so much darkness. (Applause) And we’re creating light bulbs. I want every one of you to be a fountain of joy. Fountain of joy you know. That is something that is so beautiful. And courage and valour… people with courage and valour. Hmmm?

There are many many very interesting stories. I think someone should document. I remember there was an earthquake in India 2002 perhaps 2001, in Gujarat. And a lady had lost everything. Old lady, lady of about 70’s. So when our volunteers were working, she comes and opens up her little pocket and gives a 10 rupee note. 10 rupees equivalent to what… 20 cents. Little pocket, she opens up and gives, please keep this as my contribution. Our workers said, no we have come here to give, that lady said, I lost everything please don’t take away my dharma also. She says its my heart, my charity is the only thing I hold onto please don’t take away even this, I want to do at least this charity, everything else is gone. You know our volunteer was so shocked so surprised. They said we have come to give, she said no I want to contribute. This is my dharma I have to give. Giving is my nature, I shouldn’t, please don’t take away even this from me. You take it. I will take, when I need I will take also. But when I’m giving please take from me.

GOOD AND EVIL by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (MONTREAL CANADA AUGUST 2004)
Dearest Guruji. After so many years on the path I’m finally starting to see how the divine cares for me. And that I am protected. For those with strong faith on/and a spiritual path, this appears to be so. However, what about victims of terrorism, abuse, slavery, starvation and tortures. They do not appear to be safe and protected. So is it that divine protection does not extend to all people on earth? Only those with a good fortune who do have faith? Please comment.

You do not know the mind of divine. You cannot fathom it. You cannot fathom all the mysteries of the world, you can only wonder about it. If you just stay with this question. Why the problem, why the problem. I don’t know when you will get an answer for it. Instead you should think what I can do? What I can do to help this problem. Suppose, imagine in this world there is no misery at all. Do you know one thing, all the good qualities will also disappear. I’m sure this is a tough truth to accept. You may not like to accept it because it is not too pleasant. For good qualities to exist, for compassion to exists, service to be there, kindness to be there… its opposite is essential in the world. Suppose there is no suffering, on who will you be compassionate? You will be compassionate on one who is very happy? What will happen to the quality of compassion? How will you even know compassion? That’s why the first principle of Art of Living… Opposite values are complimentary! The biggest gift to the world of theology. World of philosophy. From Art of Living is this first principle, Opposite values are complimentary. People do not know. They just are grouping in darkness. Not knowing opposite values are complimentary. They think everything is opposing. There is a fight always between good and evil. You know good and evil are friends also. In Indian mythology this comes. That both good and evil decided to play a drama, so they both came to the earth, one became a hero the other became a villain. And of course the victory is always to the hero. And then the hero thanks the villain for making him victorious, and the villain thanks the hero saying I’m so happy to be defeated at your hand and if find salvation because you defeated me. The good defeated.

This is something that is startling, it’s the story between Ram and Ravana. And Ravana the wicked was killed and the last breath of his life he says ‘I’m happy to be killed by you’. Because by that I only think of you, I attain you. What is called poison is sometimes a life saving drug. In fact if you looking at all the life saving drugs, its written poison. (laughter) And vitamins if you consume more than certain limit, that can kill you too. Opposite values are complimentary. This is a very profound knowledge. World over in theology people are struggling to place evil. Where to place evil? If God is omnipresent, omniscient… where is this place for evil to exist? If evil exist other than God, then God loses his qualification of omnipresence, number one. He loses the qualification of omnipotent, if he’s so potent why did he allow the evil to exist? And why does he warn people against the evil, number one. And then you have many stings of questions like that. Why wont God take care of the evil before it destroys everybody? Why wont God get so angry when he’s omniscient, when he knows everything, every step that is going to happen. Not a blade of grass will move without his will. Then what happens to this evil, where do you place the evil? It’s in a big mess I tell you. (laughter)

For centuries volumes have been written, people have argued back and forth. How to even count for the existence of evil. At the same time accept the omnipresence and omnipotence of God. Do you see what I’m saying? I mean we need not go into the theological discussion. Good and evil are just relative. God is absolute. They are two different fields. The ancient rishis explained in a beautiful manner. They said… the whole building, everything here is made up of wood. This is one level of truth. Yes, everything here is wood. That’s true. But the table is not the chair and chair is not the door. You can’t sit on the door. Nor put the chair for a door. Yes here everything is wood, on that level. Like atoms. Everything is atom. It is same atom which is in chocolates, same atom which is in carbon. In charcoal, you can’t gulp the charcoal. Same atom in a diamond as it is in a charcoal. Same even molecules. You can’t gulp a diamond. Or hang a charcoal in your ears. On one level there is only oneness, God comes from that level. Of everything is made up of one thing. Omnipotence. And in that there are diversities. Though it is the same wood, still it is different. One is cedar and another is sandalwood another is something else, teak wood. There is differences. And this is what is missing. There are big theological colleges. I tell you, if you just sit with them, the confusion they are in. It’s so obvious. This has robbed the smile from their faces. I’ve attended many conferences, I’ve yet to see a really childlike smiling, FREE theologian or intellectual. I think some of you should get into those colleges (guruji laughs) and bring in more life. More joy. Ya, we have to bring in that. Our education will have to make us more happier. Not so serious and bogged down.

Guruji, is it ok for us to have feverishness for the divine?
When the water in impure you put the alum. The alum removes the impurities and dissolves itself. So like that, the feverishness for truth, for divinity, for good company, can be the last feverishness. So it can replace the other ones, otherwise your mind will definitely clog onto some other feverishness. Please please take my chattering mind, I don’t want anymore mind. It’s talking too much. And it’s going all over the places. Love and gratitude. Wake up and see, where does the mind go, what does it want. We begin like that, what is that I want? First thing. Write it down whatever it may be. I want this relationship, I want this money, I want this fame, I want this, I want this. Write them down. Mind becomes so much more clearer. Its when you don’t know what you really want or long for. That’s when the mind is all over the place. And when you do not know how to achieve it, its even more trouble. And just know that even after achieving all that, you’ll be in the square one and the same place where you are. Really no use.

HMMMM? Look at all those people who have so much money. Are they happy? Look at those people who have so much fame, are they happy? Do you find satisfying or uplifting smile in those faces? Do you find them contented? No. And that peace, contentment, serenity is not in them. You look at your face into them mirror, you have much more joy and serenity than the so-called successful people in the world. Isn’t it? Hmmm, they are in a rat race. All the big industrialist, they are so miserable, they are in such a rat race, you know. Such showing off. You have how much wealth, I have so much wealth, I will show off, you show off. And then see where they end up. They’re like, really, you know, foolish kids. Really, their talks are foolish. So stupid. Their conversations are unworthy of even listening. So childish. Have no context for life. Don’t see life in context with the whole. With the vastness. With the vastness of time and space. Hmmm? Do you want to be like them? (laughter). Yeah, I tell you money is needed. No doubt. Work for money, I’m not saying just sit and daydream. Oh one day God will open the sky and pour money on my head. An angel will come on a carpet with a bowl full of gold and will give you. It’s not going to happen. Don’t sit and daydream. Don’t buy lottery ticket and look at your astrological chart. When is good luck going to come to you. It’s not going to come to you. There’s an old proverb in Sanskrit which says… tinga-linga-ling-school-bell-ring. (Paras note: Might have spelt it wrong hehehe) One who puts his effort and one who is courageous, to him the wealth will come, the goddess of wealth will come. You need to be courageous, brave, entrepreneurial and then effort. Just being courageous, not enough. One who puts the effort. So work hard, work intelligently. Money is needed but money is not all that, that is. Life is much more than that. Life is much more.

You know when the president of world bank met with me, he asked me, ‘Your holiness, please tell me the secret of your success. In the world bank we initiate so many social projects, we hardly get any success. How come your projects are successful with such a small amount of money? Less than a million dollars you’ve achieved so much result, so much has been accomplished. How is that possible?’ I told him it’s not just the money that works. Not money alone that works. Something more. It’s our volunteer’s motivation. Said, love and dedication to do work that makes you accomplish your work. What you cannot achieve at 10 million dollars, just over less than a million dollar could do that. The governments are astonished, how 21 thousand villages have been adopted. So much work happened. Hundreds of medical camps happened. Thousands of trees were planted. You must have seen all those details. How much seva happened in one years time. Then he called all his staff and said we should all have a permanent relationship with Art of Living. (applause) Said this meeting should not end here. Said we should have continuous programs happening. Lot of people are learning Art of Living here. Don’t clog yourself only to money. Life is worth much more huh?

You say come back to awareness of your body and environment at the end of meditation. I never lose awareness of my body or the environment. (laughter) Am I doing something wrong?
You know in meditation if you’re too conscious, oh what’s happening now, what’s happening, where is my mind going, am I here, am I there. In fact too attentive, too alert… meditation is not going to happen. You’re not going to relax. Meditation is not just doing that you know. Too conscious, too alert, too watchful every moment, what’s happening… no. Meditation is not concentration. Don’t concentrate on meditation. It is just letting go, relax. Hmmm? Its like when you sleep you lose the awareness of the body. In meditation, similar. You don’t know where you are but you know you are. I’m not just that. Many different type such experiences might happen. So don’t look for experiences. That becomes an obstacle for you. If you sit and… where is my experience, where is my experience. It’s not going to happen.

Dearest Guruji, I’m experiencing intense tidal waves of cravings. I don’t know how to handle them. What do we do when these cravings arise? How do we resist giving into bad habits and cravings?
A little cleansing and fasting would help you. Couple of days of just fast and juice or raw food or undergo some cleanse.

Dearest Guruji, what is the final balance between discipline, love and scolding? Sometimes I’m too soft or too hard on my loved ones. How do we teach them the right lessons with love and fairness?
How do you know you are too hard or too soft. What is your standard of measuring that. Perhaps they need that hard or that strong stance. See when you judge yourself that you’re too hard too soft, that becomes a problem. You don’t feel good about yourself. When you don’t feel good about yourself, you’ll never make others feel good. If you start accepting the way you are, you will start accepting the others the way they are also. Ya? Something to think about.

Dearest Beloved Guruji, I would like to ask you about being too sensitive. What can I do? Is this something good or not? With much love.
Who said you are too sensitive? Forget about it. Come on wake up. (Guruji laughs). When you brand yourself too sensitive. Then you prepare to get hurt. When you get hurt, then you pity yourself. See I’m too sensitive, I’m no good, I get hurt. You think you get hurt, you get even more hurt. Wake up the valour in you, come on nothing can hurt me!

What is the meaning of Natraj crushing the human body under his feet?
Natraj is the dancing Shiva. Under his feet there is a demon. This is a symbol. Demon is call apasmara. Means utter inertia. Natraja is total consciousness. The consciousness which is full of vibrance and dance. And that steps on the apasmara. Means the inertia. That means the opposite values are co-existing. Under the feet of the dance is the inertia. The dullness. That gives the whole picture of wholeness. In the wholeness, dullness is also part of it. Not just the waking… sleep is also part of it. Not just the dance, the lethargy is also part of it. To give you the full image of the wholeness. They put the opposites. One is the beautiful… standing on the ugly.

Dear Guruji, why do I crave some much for the attention and approval of others? How can I overcome this?
This is good, when you start getting more into knowledge listen to Ashtavakra. Go again and again and again. Delve more into knowledge. And understand everything is changing in the world. What is others opinion about you, so what, someone appreciates you today. How much time will it take for them to take back their appreciation. If they appreciate you, how sure are you that they are not jealous of you? And tomorrow if they blame you, what are you going to do? Let them blame. Don’t make your life football of their opinion. You know this you will understand the more you grow into knowledge huh?

With all due respect I have read of you being a living saint. What does that mean to you and how do you keep your ego out of it? Having people revere you is odd, isn’t it? Or did you always know that you had a gift to inspire others?
You know if someone reveres you, so what? Whom are you revering? When someone appreciates a painting, they’re appreciating the painter. When someone praises you, why you shrink? Why you feel uncomfortable? You should feel absolutely comfortable. And when someone blames you, then also you feel comfortable. If you are shy for compliments, you will be devastated when insults are hurled at you. In the Gita, the first thing Krishna tells Arjuna, he says ‘be equanimous’. Even if someone praises, doesn’t matter, so what. And someone blames you, doesn’t matter, so what. Nothing should touch you. People’s words, their actions, their reactions, their adorations or their blames just blow with the winds. You are there, fully centred, satisfied, unshaken. That is the whole knowledge. There is a saint in each one of you. Its wrong to think that sainthood is bestowed on somebody after they have died, and if they show some miracle here and there. Is a completely wrong principle/policy. Saint means the simplicity. Saint word comes from the Sanskrit root Sattva. Sattva means one is clear, harmonious, pure, unruffled… at home. You can be at home! You can be unruffled. And that seed of sainthood, I feel, is in every human being. Hmmm? It’s not a great deal about it. So just don’t worry. Just be like a child. I say I’m a child who refuse to grow up. Every baby is a yogi. Born yogi. And then they lose that yoga as they grow older, they lose that innocence.

Have you seen children? They do all the yoga asanas. When they are born, their legs are up in the air, they don’t sleep flat like you. They do the boat pose. (laughter) Their head is up, their legs are up. And then they try to catch hold of their toes. And then they do cycling. And then they go on the tummy. And then they do cobra pose, bojang asan (spelling). And then little while there, they do tricun asan, they crawl and one hand they lift, turn back and see, what’s happening behind them. They fall on the cheek, again they get up. If they fall by themselves nobody there they don’t cry. But if they see someone watching them then they start crying. (laughter) When they fall by themselves they wake up and they go happily. And they alternate their hands, they turn on this side and lift their hand and look. Haven’t you seen, just watch a baby. From the time it’s born to the age of 3 they do almost all the asanas. They put all the mudras (hand reflexology kinda thing). They suck the thumb, they sleep with chin mudra, then chinmaya mudra. All that they do. That’s why yoga is so natural. Its observing animals, observing human beings, observing different species, that which was conceived is yoga. It helps the growth of the mind, body.

But people say oh yoga is all devilish, satanic. You shouldn’t do yoga. It’s so unfortunate. You know in Europe, one in every third child, sometime or other goes to psychiatrist. In Washington DC 33% of youth go to prison. It’s alarming, they have committed some or other crime at some time. In such situation, these students, these kids they all need to be taught yoga. To balance their body, mind. The president of Croatia found the value of yoga, he found how his family been saved from disasters, difficulties. So he introduced yoga, immediately the church opposed oh this is all satanic. Made a big protest, withdraw yoga from the education system. It’s so unfortunate. We are not in the middle ages where all the scientists were prosecuted. It’s a free world. We should of course protest against alcohol, drugs, gambling, all these sort of things which destroy human life. Not which promotes human evolution. Wherever it comes from East or West doesn’t matter. What is needed is the welfare of mankind. We should see everyone being happy. And that is real religiosity, isn’t it? That’s unfortunate if people brand yoga as from the Satan. We all need to educate those people. Call them, have dialogue with the fanatic/fundamentalists. Educate them, hey come on, all it is is a simple exercise which uplifts your body, mind and spirit. Doesn’t matter whatever you believe. You can believe in 7th heaven, you can believe in 14th heaven, 3rd heaven. Doesn’t matter. Whatever is your belief system, but do something practical to uplift your spirit. Isn’t it necessary? That broadmindedness is what we need to bring into people.

Guruji I love you a lot, do you love me?
My dear I have no choice (guruji and everybody laugh). I cant but love you and you cant but love me. Neither you have a choice, nor do I have a choice. I am the way I am and you I tell you have no choice, you try your best not to love. (laughs and applause) See how you will get into love. Hmmm? I think everyone should play the role of a guru, at least for couple of people if not everybody. Role of guru is to be in unconditional love, support someone for their good, without expecting anything in return, not even a thank you note. That role everyone should play for as many people as possible that’s good. Play the role of a guru in your lives. Not because they are related to you, they are good friend or yours, they did favour to you, you do a favour to somebody. Just unconditionally loving, and wishing for their growth. Wishing for their blossoming. Working towards the happiness of all mankind. Then that guru principle will blossom in you, that song you know ajo anantaya, it’s so beautiful. Ajo means the guru principle is never born, guru is never born and is infinite consciousness. And ever pure. Nidhyaya shuddhaya it’s always there, eternal and pure. And in the form of bliss, dwelling in every heart. Invoking that principle and becoming one with that principle there. When you keep doing service, going deep in meditation. Sachidananda the pure consciousness you’re vibrating throbbing consciousness, everything, every cell of you, body is vibrant with that energy. Consciousness, nobody can deplete that energy. Infinite energy, you are in connection with the infinite energy. Your cells are throbbing with joy. Radiating energy and peace and love to the whole world. That is the real essence of guru principle, soaking in guru principle. Hmmm? Ok?

Why do I have health problem, is it because of bad karma? Please explain.
Health problem happens for various reasons. One is when you violate the laws of nature. If you have the wrong food, wrong habits. Violated laws of nature, health problems come. Second of course, due to some past impressions, karmas, all that is there. But you need to have confidence mind over the body. Our mind can make a difference. Definitely.

INTENTION ATTENTION MANIFESTATION (JAN 4TH 2004 – CANADIAN ASHRAM)

INTENTION ATTENTION MANIFESTATION (JAN 4TH 2004 – CANADIAN ASHRAM)
The association of a particular sense object, over and over, creates a sense of craving for it. If you’re used to eating ice cream almost everyday (laughter), then you get craving for it. If you’re used to drinking coffee… You were not born with a coffee craze. (laughter) Nobody is born with a craving for coffee, but you have started a habit within you. That habit has created a craving. How did you start? It didn’t happen one day. Even if you ask the addicts, the addiction doesn’t start in one day. Addiction starts with the repeated experience of the same thing. So repeated experience of a particular thing creates an addiction or a habit. The nature of habit is that it doesn’t give you joy but it gives you pain. To leave that, it becomes a pain… in the neck (laughs). But having it is not giving you bliss or ecstasy. This is the definition for habits. So you are drinking coffee, its not carrying you to heaven, but leaving it gives you headache. Similarly alcohol, drugs… all those who are drunk alcoholics you look at their face. Its so sad and remorse. They are not in such beautiful/smiling or ecstatic state of consciousness. They are not in a state of consciousness filled with joy. In fact they’re other way round. Not a bit of joy in alcoholics face. Even if you squeeze it, not a drop of joy will come out. (laughter) The alcohol has cleanly dried all that stuff from it. The joy with which one is born. The joy/innocence has been robbed away. Washed out. So alcoholism, sex addiction, any other type of… drug addiction. All these are result of repeated experience or association of a particular sense with the object of a sense. So you think about it and you want it more. And in New York prison, a child abuse criminal was asked what is your desire… before his capital punishment he was asked. He said ban all pornography. I would like all the pornographic magazines to be banned. Because that is what one puts their attention to and that is where the craving begins in the system. More and more and more.

It’s a fine line, you know. So with the association, what happens? Desire for it rises. More. To have it. With the desire what comes next? Weather a desire is fulfilled or unfulfilled anger comes. Whenever someone is angry, behind that anger you will see there is a desire. A craving. The craving brings? Anger. So you get angry at somebody. The next step is you get attachment for somebody. And whomsoever you are angry at, sooner or later you’re going to regret. And that regret brings more attachment to that person. Or that situation or that thing. By regretting you don’t move away from that something, about that something. You go more into it. You will see, whomsoever you hate/you are angry at… you think of them more than anybody else, (even) yourself. You know why you should not hate anybody? Do you know why? The reason? You shouldn’t hate somebody because you become like somebody you hate. You think of someone whom you love, you have such a nice pleasant feeling arising within you. And you think of someone whom you hate, your nervous system undergoes some distortion. There is a tension/distortion happening within your system. That means what? Your nervous system is becoming or assuming the form of the person whom you dislike. And you keep doing it again and again and again. You get all that impression, your system becomes like them. So when you become like them you get drawn to them. And that is entanglement. Desire or obsession. I can’t call it desire. An OBSESSION brings anger. Anger brings entanglement. And entanglement clouds the intellect. Your becomes blurred. Your wisdom is lost, judgement is lost, sharpness of awareness is lost, your accessing the situation is lost. It’s a chain reaction, one after another. And such a subtle manner it happens, you don’t even realize it. The entanglement weather out of like or out of hate can cloud the intellect. And the clouded/distorted intellect doesn’t let you be in peace. Doesn’t even bring up the emotions in you. Subtle feelings in you. Any feeling you’ll be getting is grossed within that, violent feelings. You don’t feel lighter when there is hatred within you. Have you noticed? When there is worry in your head, do you feel calm? Do you feel a lighter feeling? And you walk around with a load of worries in your head. And it shows up in your face, in your vibrations, it spreads in your entire environment. And nobody likes to come near you or talk to you or do anything with you. (Lady giggles). Your vibration indicates weather there is lead inside you or there is flowers within you. Are you light like cotton candy within? (laughter) Or are you like a stone inside? What’s happening there? This shows up in your vibrations. In your surroundings. Can’t you see that? You look at someone who’s so worried you come to feel oh there is such a sense of heaviness. And heaviness is contrary to joy, contrary to love and contrary to all that you cherish as human values.

With this the memory is lost. Memory of pleasant things are lost. Life has got two sets of memories. One is the memory of unpleasant things the other is memory of pleasant things. Children often have the memory of pleasant things more than unpleasant things. That’s why they keep themselves cheerful most of the time. And as we grow older, as we lose our innocence, our unpleasant memories increase than the pleasant ones. Say again, the spiritual practices/meditation is to put the wheel back. Is to bring back the pleasant memories more and more and more. And unpleasant memories to almost insignificant amount. So when the memory is lost, the memory of who am I? What do I want in my life? The memory of reality, the truth. Seeing life in context with the universe that’s called wisdom. If that is lost. There is no peace left. And there is no happiness in life. So the practices, meditation… all these things that you do here, is to withdraw the mind and take it to its source. Even for few minutes. And then you see you feel so fresh, light. How many of you feel like that? And most of the world is missing this key to success in life. What people out there do not know is this simple wisdom, simple knowledge of life… of returning back and coming into action. The self, it referral value, consciousness. (Paras note: Didn’t get that line). Which makes it rich, energetic, pleasant, beautiful. Hmmm? What do you say? (Applause)

So again and again. Pull back your attention from the objects of the senses, into the senses and to the source of mind. Source of consciousness. This journey within, gives you that strength/endurance. Makes you endure all different situations in life. How pleasant/unpleasant they are.

See have you ever expressed your displeasure without getting mad or losing yourself? Huh? Ask yourself have you done it? And those are the moments, which are being beneficial even if you were mad. You can get mad I don’t mind, but not that anger in which you are lost, you are shivering/shaking. Showing the anger… I mean in life it’s impossible to deal in all situations without at least sometimes somewhere showing anger. (Paras note: Shiva symbolism at the bottom *) Don’t expect life to be a sort of flat, bland, goody-goody thing. Sometimes you have to show anger. You have to be angry. It’s alright. Its ok. But those moments have you noticed if it is really not taking away your centeredness? Your peace? That is most important. There was a sage, a rishi, was called Durwasa. Usually people, when someone is very angry, they say oh he’s like Durwasa. Terrible temper. He was a sage. A saint with so much anger. You know for that saint, that anger was an exercise. To see weather in spite of all that anger that he didn’t lose himself. Lose the centeredness. Was not afraid of anger. Sometimes you know you’re so sacred of your own anger. “Oh I got angry, oh I lost it, oh I’m so sorry, I’m so stupid, all these years of meditation didn’t take me anywhere.” (mad laughter). “I still get mad, I still lose it.” What are you doing? Self-blame culture have started. Nurturing it. “Oh its useless doing all this meditation. All these years of sadhna gone waste. I still get angry, I can’t improve.” This sort of self-criticism you did, you delve into. This is not… you know. Durwasa reminds you. That was only one example of one rishi who used to get angry. And every time he got angry he did something wonderful to the world. (laughs) Said with every anger that Durwasa had, the world rejoiced. Once it so happened, Durwasa he came to town with his huge gang of disciples. (Guruji does funny gestures. Laughter) And went to a devotees house between the forest. At that time Kings were living in exile. And he went to their home. Said I’m very hungry. And at that very moment all of them had had lunch, washed all their vessels and put everything out. Everyday they would go fetch food and come and cook and have food. They never used to store food at home. So when everybody had finished their lunch… here comes Durwasa. And with a huge gang of people with him. Now the lady of the house, Draupadhi, she didn’t know what to do with Rishi Durwasa. It’s a custom that whenever a guest comes to your home and their hungry, it’s your obligation to feed them. You don’t do it, its not even considered as a decency, courtesy, to say ‘oh there is no food’. Can’t even say that, not considered decent. And Durwasa if he gets angry, don’t know? (laughter). The drop of a hat he gets angry. So then Krishna was there. She went to Krishna, please tell me, you’re my brother, you have to do something. How do I do? Durwasa has come with his whole gang. (laughs). So Krishna is always tricky. (laughter). He was too intelligent. As a trickster he know how to handle every situation. He went and spoke to Rishi Durwasa and said ‘oh wonderful, what great luck, what a great opportunity you coming here. You have given such a chance to my sister to host you here. But it would be so nice, you need to take a shower and see you’ve come with all these people, such a long distance and so many of you walking. All the dust has come into your clothes and all. You need to take a bath! (laughter). There is a nice river and wonderful temperature of water. Why don’t you go take bath.’ So Krishna persuaded him and he said ok I’m going to take a bath. So they went to take a bath. Meanwhile Krishna went to his sister and said show me the vessel, if the vessel has even little bit in it… then I will see what could be done. So Dhraupadhi went to the pot and it was already washed and she took one grain of rice. Was sticking to the pot. Coz it was not washed properly. (Mad laughter). Because when she was washing it, she heard the news that Durwasa is coming! (Crazy mad laughter). That frightened her, so it was not washed properly. One grain of rice was sticking to the vessel. And Krishna took that grain and then he made that sankalpa (intention) and he ate that grain. And said by the time they all took their baths and returned they were so full! Don’t cook any food for us we are so full. We are not hungry any more.

This is one version of the story. (Guruji jokes) I think that’s the correct version, I don’t know. (Extra crazy mad laughter and applause. Other version is one grain multiplied into so much and then all the thousands could eat. It’s the second version. But anyway, weather the rice multiplied or without eating they all felt so full because Krishna at it with the intention. So that’s called Akshay Parkroyal/parkruya (spelling). That means a vessel that never diminishes. Always more that comes. And this happens many times, many times in our satsangs it’s happened. People come, very little food, sometimes people bring 2-3 people. 50-60 people have eaten. Has happened not ones, many times. Many of you know also. (Paras note: Sai Baba and other spiritual homies did it too)

So it is that intention. The attention. And manifestation. That’s how the universe functions. Intention>Attention>Manifestation. So wherever you put your attention, that starts manifesting in your life. So you put too much attention on anger then anger manifests. Too much attention on lust, lust manifests. Greed, greed manifests. So you show anger, without intending to get angry. When the intention is love even anger does good. That’s what the case was with Durwasa. So every time he was angry, some great thing happened on the planet. And he did only good. To all mankind. Are you with me? So observe the intention and put your attention where you have to put it. Whatever you want, that to manifest. Focus on love and let love manifest.

Symbolism: Typed this before but couldn’t find it. Ok so you know there’s many forms of Lord Shiva. Neelakanta is his name for the one with a dark neck/blue spot on the neck. Shiva drank the poison and it settled in his neck as he did not take it in. My first AOL guru told me that the symbolism is that when we’re angry… take it out from your neck upward… as in voice it out/show it in your eyes/etc… but don’t let your heart get into it.

Guruji/Sri Sri Ravi Shankar gave glimpse about mysteries of Universe!!‏

Guruji/Sri Sri Ravi Shankar gave glimpse about mysteries of Universe!!‏
Sri Sri: “There are four levels of speech – para, pashyanti, madhyama, vaikari.

The language we speak is vaikari. It is the most manifest form of speech. Chatvari vak parimita padani – there are four levels of speech and the intelligence knows all forms. Human beings speak only the fourth level. Subtler than vaikari, is madhyama. Even before you say it, the thought form is cognized. When you catch it at that level, it is madhyama. Pashyanti is cognitive. There is no need for spoken words. Para is the untold, un-manifest knowledge that is beyond.

The whole universe is spherical. It was never born nor will it ever die. It is anadi, beginningless, and anantha – endless. Then what is the job of Brahma, the creator? They say there are many, many Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in every yuga (age). In time and space this keeps happening. So what is the source of this creation? Parame vyoman – beyond the akasha (space). Knowledge lies beyond the akasha. Knowledge lies beyond the five elements.

Richo akashare parame vyoman

Vedas which were cognized are not vaikari. This cognition is beyond the space. All the Divine impulses are established in that field which is all permeating.

What is akasha? Akasha is described as vyoma, vyapti – it means all-permeating, all-pervading. What is it that is beyond akasha? It is unimaginable to think of something that is beyond space. Only a scientist can understand this. Everything is contained in akasha, all the four elements are in akasha. The most gross is earth, then water, fire, air and space. Air is finer, subtler than fire. Space is the subtlest. Then it is air-fire-water and earth. What is it that is beyond even akasha? That is the mind, intellect, ego and the Mahatattva. This is tattva gyan – knowing the principle of the universe. Unless you know the principle of the universe, you cannot know the Self. When you go beyond the akasha, it is an experiential field. The whole realm begins beyond the akasha.

The ancient seers have spoken about the Dravya guna sambandha or relationship between the substance and its quality. There is a very interesting debate if we can separate the quality from the substance. The whole philosophy is very interesting and the conclusion was that you cannot separate the quality from the substance. Can the sweetness in sugar be separated from sugar? Will it remain sugar still? Can heat and light be separated from fire? Will it still be fire after that?

What brings the quality into the substance? What comes first – the quality or the substance? There are many questions like this. The subtler you go is the paramevyoman. yasmin devaadhi vishwe nishedu. -All the devis and devtas reside there, in that space. Yattanaveda yati vaanaveda – What is the use of knowing the vedic hymns and mantras without knowing the parame vyoman, without understanding the principles of the universe?

Swarupa is the quality of that space. It cannot be fully translated in English. Swarupa is that consciousness. From the Swarupa happens the Sputa or explosion from which Svarita, creation flows and Sakaara – manifests with name and form. All the millions of beings in the creation were formed from the Swarupa.”

After this most astonishing revelation about the creation of the universe, was a presentation by Archana Sharma a Particle Physicist from CERN, Geneva, Switzerland who shared a few glimpses of their efforts to identify the god particle with the help of the LHC (large Hydron Collidor). Sri Sri has often said, “Spirituality begins where Science ends.” In today’s satsang we had the opportunity to hear about that which is beyond space, beyond expression and the attempt of science to know the unknowable.
“That which you cannot express is Love.
That which you cannot reject/renounce is Beauty.
That which you cannot avoid is the Truth.”
~ Sri Sri

Dark Energy from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Dark Energy from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Question: Guruji, You said at the Navratri the we see only 0.003% of what is actually happening. Can you please talk on that?
Guruji: You know there was this scientist named Mickel Kako who established a theory, after having done several experiments and research, that there are parallel worlds. It is he who said that, what we see is only 0.003% of what is actually happening. What we cannot see is the ‘Dark Energy’. That’s what he named it. The power of that ‘Dark Energy’ is unlimited! Its immense! In fact our Rig-Veda also says the same thing. The ‘Dark’ is referred to here as the ‘Tamas’. Even Rig-Veda says that this ‘Tamas’ has great power. That’s why they say ‘Kali’. The dark goddess. She just does not symbolize destruction, she is also referred to as the epitome of knowledge. Like the pupil of our eye is dark! It is because of that we can see. Do you see what I am saying? The source of knowledge is the ‘Kaali’

Ramayan Symoblism from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Ramayan Symoblism from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Question: Guruji, Hanuman was the biggest devotee to the Lord Rama, why is it that we don’t get to see Him any more?
Guruji: You don’t get to see Him any more because He has settled in your heart!! And he wants you to look into your heart. Whatever fear of Lanka you have in your mind he wants you to get rid of it, and He is making the tail and the fire ready to burn it!! When the atmarupi Ram(referring to Sri Rama as the self) wants to meet the maanrupi Sita(referring to Sita as the mind), then devotion (referring to Hanuman) should take over to burn fear(referring to Lanka) by destroying Ravana(Ego) with the help of Laxmana(awareness). In such a place, Victory is confirmed!!! And that day becomes the Dashere and Diwali. So there is a Dashera and a Diwali happening everday in our life!! (laughter!!)

Update from Ameet
When Sita (mind), gets attracted by the Deer (sense objects), it comes under the clutches of Ravan (the ego) and goes away from Rama (the Self); then with the help of Laxman (awareness) and Hanuman (the breath), it is freed from Ravan (the ego) and united with Rama (the Self). ~ Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
