A Post Dedicated to Seva / Service / Volunteering

Quotes on Seva:
“Our first and foremost commitment in the world is to serve”

“Poor people fight for food. Rich people share their food. Richer still are those who share power. Richer are those who share fame. Richest of all are those who share themselves. A person’s wealth is measured by his ability to share and not what he hoards”

“Whether you consider yourself intelligent or not, there is no escape from service – service gives you immediate satisfaction”

“The more you give the more will be given to you”

Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.

One of the best quotes on Service/Seva/Volunteering
Any seva is the best seva (service) if it is done with 100% attention. Seva is doing what is needed to be done at that moment.
Right now somebody is in dire need of a glass of water. You may say giving a glass of water is not a big seva, instead let me build a house for them. Right now he is dying out of thirst; he needs a glass of water. That is the best seva you can do. – Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Always know that the Divine never gives you a responsibility you cannot fulfil. No one ever expects you to treat them if you are not a doctor. No one will ask you to fix their wiring system if you are not an electrician.
– Your responsibility is only what you can do.
– And you do not know what you can do.
– Always accept that you do not know what you can do.
– Ignorance of your capability can expand you.

When you know what you can do, you can progress. But when you do not know what you can do, you can grow by leaps and bounds.

When you know what you can do, you can do things. When you do not know what you can do, you can do things even better!

5 Type of Seva by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

The first type is the seva done when you do not even know what you are doing it. You do not recognize it as seva because it is your very nature – you cannot help doing it!

The second type is the seva that you do because it is needed for that situation.

The third type of seva is done because it gives you joy.

The fourth type is done out of your desire for merit – you do seva expecting some benefit in the future.

And the fifth type is when you do seva just to show off, to improve your image and to gain social and political recognition. Such seva is simply exhausting, while the first type does not bring any tiredness at all!

To improve the quality of your seva, regardless of where you start, you must move up to the higher levels.

Being a volunteer doesn’t just build a sense of community. It also builds a better person. It teaches you to be selfless. To think about others, to put their needs, wishes, welfare and safety ahead of your own. In a world of selfies and selfishness, being a volunteer brings you to your senses.
Being a volunteer is good for you.
Ben Martin

Also – Don’t get taken advantage of

Where you need to help others, there you help.
If people are taking advantage of you, put your food down and say, ‘No more’.
Our compassion should always be accompanied with wisdom.
Wisdom is knowing
whom to give, where to give
and
what to give, how to give

Sri Sri
Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is… Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you. Pope Francis
