About Short Film Showcase:
The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. We look for work that affirms National Geographic’s belief in the power of science, exploration, and storytelling to change the world. The filmmakers created the content presented, and the opinions expressed are their own, not those of National Geographic Partners.

Crime and addiction are prevalent in this shanty town, which is less than two square kilometers. Older women, like Beatrice, must be inside before dark to protect themselves from attack. Certain men believe these women are less likely to be HIV positive, so many have been sexually assaulted and some have even been killed. Recently, Beatrice decided enough was enough and decided to fight back. She organized self defense classes for the “grandmothers” of Korogocho. As a result, rape cases have greatly been reduced and the women now feel empowered to take back their community.

Filmmaker Brent Foster shares Beatrice’s story in this powerful short.
