Why Permanent Changes Take Exactly 6 Months

For years, I noticed a strange pattern in my life. Anything I worked on felt like slow progress until the 6 month mark. Whether it was fitness, content creation, mindset work, fasting, meditation, business or personal growth.

At first, I thought it was a coincidence. Then I started digging into the science and discovered something fascinating. A few experts in the field would mention 6 months so I looked back and noticed the pattern. It turns out there may be a biological reason why six months feels like a magic number.

Most habit advice says it takes 21 days to create a habit. So and so days to change your life, etc. In my personal experience, those days made it easier if I kept at it. But here is how it works… the first few days you’re carving a new path through tall grass and still have to struggle through it before you can even see it. There is little progress but you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Then others start seeing the opening in the grass and use it too, making the path clearer faster. Now you’re finding it easier and things are starting to show until you or someone comes along and says… ‘hey, there is a path here, I just need to clear it more and it will be smooth’. Boom. Well that’s my analogy.

The 6 Month Brain Upgrade
Neuroscientists call it myelination. This is a protective coating that wraps around neural pathways. The pathways you’ve just built. The more you use it, the more of a path it becomes. I teach my son to keep doing hard things because eventually they stop being hard things. The hard thing turns into a default thing.
Greasing the groove: The other day I was telling my friend about greasing the groove, which is a strength training strategy where you perform a specific exercise at a moderate, non-fatiguing intensity multiple times throughout the day to maximize neural efficiency and hardwire the movement pattern into your nervous system e.g. every time you pass the pullup bar you do one to 5 pullups.

Transtheoretical Model of Behaviour Change
This is one of the most widely used models for creating lasting change. New behaviours remain highly vulnerable to relapse until they have been maintained consistently for around six months. Your whole identity changes in this time. The change seems sudden but it’s like a bamboo seed that didn’t show results and then suddenly shot up. More on that here – Good Teachers are Good Students First & Summarised Parable of the Fern and Bamboo

Reticular Activating System (RAS)
This is another important factor. It’s the brain’s filtering system. The usual examples are: “Don’t think of a pink elephant” or “How many red cars do you see?” When you repeatedly focus on something every day, you train this system to notice opportunities, people, ideas and solutions related to that focus. In the start nothing seems different, small adjustments happen and BOOM again. Oh I’m not focusing on the wrong things!
Neuroplasticity: Neuroplasticity is your brain’s built-in ability to change its own wiring, allowing a conscious effort today to become an automatic habit tomorrow through consistent repetition.

My Personal Rule
Go really hard in the start and really focus on fine tuning your behaviour, actions, thoughts, words to align and be congruent with the change you want. I use Suno.ai to create the song I want to repeat to myself, automatically load webpages in the morning and evening for things I need to focus on and put obstacles in the way like saying a short phrase/doing an action before I get in a new environment. Then I just trust the process because I’ve seen it work too many times not to.
