Japanese Cube Test (Kokology)

This test, inspired by Tadahiko Nagao’s Kokology: The Game of Self-Discovery, uses visualization to tap into your subconscious. Close your eyes and imagine each scene vividly in a vast, endless desert. Answer honestly based on what comes to mind—there’s no right or wrong. Jot down your details (size, material, color, position, etc.) for each element. Once you’re done, scroll to the interpretations below. The Visualization

  1. The Cube: Imagine you are in a desert and come across a cube.
    • What size is it?
    • What material is it made of?
    • Where exactly is it (e.g., buried under the sand, sitting on top, floating)?
  2. The Ladder: Upon floating the air, you move?
    • What material is the ladder made of?
    • How tall is it in relation to the cube?
    • Where is it in relation to the cube (e.g., touching, leaning against it, detached)?
  3. The Horse: Now picture a horse…
    • How far is it from the cube?
    • What is it doing (e.g., standing still, moving)?
    • What does it look like (e.g., tied up, roaming free)?
  4. The Flowers: Now picture a flower…
    • How many flowers do you see?
    • Where are they in relation to the cube?
  5. The Storm: Then, a thunderstorm begins…
    • Where is the storm in relation to the cube (e.g., far away, directly above, passing quickly)?

Take a moment to reflect on your images. Ready for Interpretations. These are based on relational psychology principles from the original Kokology framework. Your subconscious choices reveal hidden aspects of your personality, relationships, ambitions, and stresses. Interpretations can vary slightly by detail, so consider what feels true to you.

  • The Cube (Your Ego/Self-Perception):
This represents you—your core identity and self-view.
    Size
Large: Confident, outgoing, natural leader with a big ego.
Small: Shy, modest, introverted; you prefer staying under the radar.
    Material
Solid/strong (e.g., metal, stone): Resilient and emotionally stable. Soft/fragile (e.g., glass, fabric): Sensitive, easily influenced, or empathetic. Transparent: Open and honest with others. Opaque: Private, guarded about your inner world.
    Position
On the ground: Practical, down-to-earth, self-aware. Buried: Future-oriented planner who loves organization. Floating: Dreamy, idealistic or disconnected from reality.
  • The Ladder (Your Ambitions/Friends):
This symbolizes your goals, career aspirations or close friendships (depending on context—often both).
    Material
Sturdy (e.g., wood, metal): Ambitious and determined. Flimsy: Cautious or unrealistic about goals; flexible but unreliable.
    Height
Taller than cube: High aspirations; you aim big (or value friends/family highly and look up to them). Equal: Balanced, realistic goals (or see friends as equals). Shorter: Modest ambitions (or prefer a small, intimate circle of friends).
    Relation to Cube
Leaning/touching: Goals intertwined with self (or rely on friends for support). Detached: Independent; you tackle challenges solo. Below: You view yourself as an authority (or friends look up to you).
  • The Horse (Your Ideal Partner/Lover):
This reflects your romantic desires and current relationship dynamics.
    Distance
Close to cube: Strong, passionate connection with partner; intimacy is key. Far away: Distant emotionally or seeking independence in love.
    Action
Standing still/tied up: Prefer stability and commitment. Roaming free/moving away: Value freedom; your ideal is adventurous or unattached.
    Appearance
Strong/muscular: Attracted to confident, reliable partners. Delicate/elegant: Drawn to refined, appearance-focused types who enjoy pampering.
  • The Flowers (Children/Family or Happiness):
These represent your views on children, family bonds or sources of joy in life.
    Number
Many: Desire a big family or lots of loved ones; optimistic about legacy. Few/none: Prefer a small circle or no kids; value quality over quantity.
    Relation to Cube
Surrounding it: Family/children central to your identity; nurturing and close-knit. Near but separate: Appreciate family but maintain boundaries. Far away: Independent from family ties; focus elsewhere.
    Appearance
Vibrant/healthy: Positive, hopeful about family life. Wilted/fragile: Concerns about nurturing or past family issues.
  • The Storm (Stress/Fears):
This embodies how you handle problems, worries or life’s challenges.
    Distance
Far away: Low stress; you live worry-free and resilient. Close/approaching: Proactive; ready to confront issues head-on.
    Intensity
Mild/passing quickly: Optimistic outlook; troubles don’t linger. Violent/directly above: Overwhelmed currently; fears feel all-consuming.
    Duration
Short: Bounce back fast from setbacks. Lingering: Tendency to dwell on problems.

Final Thoughts
This isn’t a rigid diagnosis—it’s a mirror for self-reflection. Notice patterns: Does your confident cube match an independent horse? Share your visions with friends for fun group insights (their interpretations of your scene can reveal even more). If something resonates deeply, journal about it. Derived from Tadahiko Nagao’s work, tests like this highlight how our minds project inner truths onto simple symbols.
